Eastwood Community Garden

Eastwood of Ames is owned by Community Housing Initiatives (CHI).  CHI is dedicated to providing high-quality affordable housing options across the state of Iowa.  CHI assumed ownership and site management of Eastwood when it was acquired from HUD in 2006.  CHI was able to completely update and modernize the apartment units for the residents in 2010. All 60 of the units remained designated as affordable housing for low income families.

CHI’s Resident Services Department has focused on providing specialized programs and supportive services to the residents that live at Eastwood, involvement of the surrounding community through volunteer opportunities, and general community engagement.  The community garden at Eastwood is one of the tools used enrich resident life.  It gives residents easy access to quality fresh produce, right outside their door and learning opportunities about natural science.

At the beginning of April in 2013 Resident Services launch Ames Enrichment Academy (AEA), a summer and after-school program for child grade K-5th who participate in the free and reduced school lunch program.  One of the activities for AEA is Growing Minds.  Growing Minds occurs once a week during the summer months and focuses on using the garden as a learning tool about natural sciences for kids in AEA.

Residents, volunteers and children take part in planting, maintaining and harvesting. We are looking for residents at Eastwood and volunteers from the Ames community to assist with the garden and Growing Minds.
