The Sawyer Elementary school garden was started in Spring 2012 as a result of students learning about the garden at Kate Mitchell and asking their principal if they could have one also. Their principal said yes and now the garden is a popular attraction before and after school for kids, parents and teachers.
Two AmeriCorps VISTAs coordinate the garden through a partnership between the Volunteer Center of Story County and Prairie Rivers of Iowa RC&D.
The garden is meant to teach students and community members about gardening, healthy eating and much more!
Popular garden activities include:
- after school garden club
- an annual farmers market
- working in the garden before and after school
- teachers incorporating the garden into their lesson plans
